Dr. Huma Shakil is an Internal Medicine Board certified, accomplished, and dedicated medical professional whose extensive qualifications and contributions have made a significant impact on her community and the field of medicine. She has maintained a successful solo practice in Internal Medicine with affiliations at Western Maryland Health System, Cumberland, MD where she has played an integral role since September 1994 to date.

Dr. Shakil’s educational journey encompasses a distinguished academic background. She completed her graduate studies from Dow Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan. She has embarked on a remarkable journey, starting with her clinical externship in Medicine at Memorial Hospital Center in Cumberland, Maryland, from March 1990 to June 1991. From June 1991 to June 1994, she went through internships, residencies, and chief residency positions at The Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Shakil’s exceptional achievements have garnered recognition and accolades. She has been consistently nominated for the Physician of the Year award by WMHS, demonstrating her exceptional medical expertise and dedication. Her notable accomplishments include securing the first prize in the Clinical Vignette Category for her presentation on “An Unusual Case of Syncope” at the Maryland Chapter Meeting of ACP. In addition, Dr. Shakil earned a full scholarship during her time at DOW Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan.

With a strong commitment to academia, Dr. Shakil has served as a preceptor for the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM)’s Maryland Western Maryland-AHEC (Area Health Education Center) Program since the year 2000, maintaining a significant influence on the next generation of medical professionals. Demonstrating her commitment to professional growth and excellence, Dr. Shakil has been an active member of esteemed organizations such as the American Medical Association and the American College of Physicians since 1992.

Dr. Shakil’s contributions extend beyond her medical expertise into impactful research and presentations. Her research endeavors include collaborations with prestigious institutions such as The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she explored gene expressions in heart failure. She has presented research findings on diverse medical topics at notable conferences and meetings, further highlighting her commitment to advancing medical knowledge.

Dr. Huma Shakil’s involvement within the community is equally remarkable. Her support spans various organizations and initiatives, including the WMHS Foundation, Allegany County Breast & Cervical Program, Allegany Health Right Patients, and initiatives aimed at reducing fees for uninsured patients. Dr. Shakil’s dedication extends to education, with her contributions to the establishment of an Educational Scholarship at Frostburg State University and the Accelerated Reading Program at Park Side Elementary School. She has also actively supported various programs in mathematics, science, and the arts at Braddock Middle School and Allegany High School.

Dr. Shakil’s philanthropic efforts extend internationally, encompassing relief programs such as the United Nations Relief Programs, Red Cross initiatives, and support for worldwide charities and educational endeavors.
