Ultrasound Services Q&A

The board-certified internal medicine and family medicine practitioners take a proactive and preventive approach to health and wellness.

What are the benefits of ultrasound services?
Ultrasound studies use low-level sound waves rather than radiation to capture images of various structures inside your body. Because sound waves don’t travel well through bone and air, ultrasounds aren’t helpful for imaging the lungs or brain. Still, they’re painless, pose no risk to the patient, and are highly effective for examining soft-tissue structures like your gallbladder, heart, and blood vessels. For an extra measure of convenience, CN Internal Medicine offers in-office ultrasound services.
Why would I need ultrasound services?
Ultrasound are used to diagnose various conditions, monitor treatment effectiveness, and assess the stability of previous procedures like angioplasty or stenting. The clinic offers several types of ultrasounds, including carotid ultrasound to check for blockages in the neck arteries that increase stroke risk, echocardiogram to evaluate heart health and blood flow, thyroid ultrasound to detect cysts, nodules, or tumors affecting thyroid function, and arterial and venous ultrasounds to assess leg circulation for issues such as swelling, pain, or varicose veins.
What happens during an ultrasound?
During an ultrasound, you lie comfortably on an exam table as a trained technician passes a small hand-held device (transducer) over the area under study. Sound waves emitted by the transducer pass harmlessly through the skin and bounce (echo) off tissue structures. The transducer captures the echoes and transmits them to a nearby computer, which creates and records images for your physician’s review. Most ultrasounds take 30-60 minutes, depending on the type.
